Rockwell-Republic

(Grand Rapids, MI) — While Hurricane Irene terrorizes the east coast, here in Michigan we enjoy warm and clear weather somewhat humidity-free. In other words, deck weather. We quickly tally all of the places we could go to enjoy a little sun and fresh air for Saturday lunch, then come up with the winner: Rockwell-Republic. Our good friend, Ian, opts to tag along on this adventure too, so we drive in the sunshine to meet him at the restaurant...

North Shore Inn

(Benton Harbor, MI) — We’ve long been on a quest for the “best burger” and while there is no shortage of opinions from our friends and fellow foodies (not to mention differences of opinion), one establishment has been on our list to review for quite some time: North Shore Inn, located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. You don’t have to strong-arm us with tales of old-school tavern fare, so we set out for a late Friday night dinner...

Bistro Bella Vita

(Grand Rapids, MI) — With the hullabaloo of Grandwich having reached its logical conclusion, we found ourselves in need of a nearby and convenient place for dinner Monday night. Bistro Bella Vita is not too far away, as luck would have it. We’ve dined here many times in past, often choosing to sit out on their patio, enjoying the fresh air and abundant sunshine. Tonight, however, we sought the cool interior for an early meal...

Grandwich 2011

It challenged over 40 local restaurants to create a “Grandwich”, an original sandwich that reflected the city and used local ingredients. Generally speaking, I liked the idea. I mean, I am a foodie, and the prospect of trying a bunch of different sandwiches—one of which would become the “official” sandwich of Grand Rapids—sounded like a lot of fun.

Pearl's New Orleans Kitchen

(Elk Rapids, MI) — For some time now, friends have been telling us about Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen up in Elk Rapids. It’s received rave reviews from acquaintances and food bloggers, so when we booked a weekend trip to attend the Traverse City Film Festival, it only seemed natural to include a quick jaunt further north for some down south spicy cooking...
